The Traditional treatments for mesothelioma are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Mesothelioma cannot be cured completely in reality even using these treatments. More and more research has being carried on various types of treatments and it is advancing. New therapies are being studied for mesothelioma.
The therapies are the following
1. Multimodality Therapy
The combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery can best be used to treat mesothelioma in the Multimodality therapy. Radiation can be done before surgery, and chemotherapy can follow. Multimodality is generally individualized depending upon the patient’s needs and the stage and type of cancer.
2. Gene Therapy
Gene therapy is a treatment that involves introducing DNA or RNA material into a person's cells to fight disease. Cancerous cells are targeted in order to make them more prone to chemotherapy drugs.
3. Photodynamic Therapy
Cancerous cells are destroyed or killed using laser light in Photodynamic Therapy. Drugs are administered before the process to make cells sensitive to light of a certain wavelength and when these cells are exposed to this light the drugs help in destroying the cells.
4. Anti-Angiogenic Therapy
Angiogenesis means the growth and development of new blood vessels. In mesothelioma new blood vessels help the disease by spreading the cancerous cells throughout the body of the patient. It is very important to halt the growth of new blood vessels. Hence Anti-angiogenic therapy is aimed at preventing cancer cells from growing new blood vessels, thereby slowing or even stopping the development of cancer.
5. Immunotherapy
The immune system helps the body in recognizing and fighting bacteria, viruses and other foreign materials. But it may not be able to recognize the difference between normal cells and cancerous cells. Immunotherapy is a type of therapy that helps the immune system to fight cancerous cells. This therapy helps the immune system to recognize that cancerous cells are harmful and so helps the body’s defenses to attack such harmful cells
