Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

The Rarest Cancer is Sarcomatoid mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma can be categorized broadly as: epithelial, sarcomatoid and biphasic.

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is the rarest form of cancer, affecting only 10-20% of patients. In this type of mesothelioma, cells transform as spindle-shaped pattern that overlap each other and occurs from support tissues such as cartilage, muscle, bone and fat. When the cancer is only on the membrane surface it can be known as Localized mesothelioma. In advanced stages, it might spread beyond the original membrane surface to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, lymph nodes, chest wall, or abdominal organs.

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma Symptoms:

Symptoms of mesothelioma might appear several decades after exposure to asbestos. The most common are severe pain due to fluid retention in the pleural area, spinal swelling and cough, weight loss and accumulation of fluid in abdominal cavity, blood clotting abnormality, anemia, and fever are other symptoms.

How to diagnose Sarcomatoid mesothelioma:

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma, is diagnosed by extraction of affected tissue during biopsy, it is usually difficult because symptoms of mesothelioma are similar to those of other diseases. Response to treatment is poor, which might result in fatality within a year of diagnosis.

Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

Four types of Mesothelioma cancer are found; three types of them are very common, dangerous and are very hard to treat.

1. Pleural Mesothelioma

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma

4. Benign Mesothelioma

1. Pleural Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs which originates within the chest cavity. The function of pleura the lining, is to produce lubricating fluid so that the lungs can move smoothly during the individual breaths. It has a higher probability of spreading to other organs of the body. This is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma which has an occurrence of approximately 75% of all the malignant mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma could be wrongly diagnosed as lung cancer. Hence you should remember that it originates in the lining of the lungs and not from the lungs

Inhalation of Asbestos, is the main reason for this disease, these Asbestos was used by the construction manufacturers especially the cement manufacturing companies.

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma develops in the abdomen where it affects the peritoneum. Peritoneum is the outer line surrounding the internal organs in abdominal cavity. It produces a lubricating fluid in order to allow the stomach to move freely. This mesotholioma usually spreads to other parts of the body such as the liver or bowels and it usually does not respond well to treatments as it is more aggressive.

As it is difficult to treat, peritoneal mesothelioma often results in an early death. The patient gets intense pain in this disease as this disease attacks and destroys soft tissue and nearby nerves. Treatment might enable some patients to experience long-term survival, but overall survival rates would depend on different treatments or combinations of treatments.

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma originates in the sac that contain the heart. The tumors develop in the heart lining or Pericardium. This Mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma cancer that accounts for approximately 5% of all mesothelioma cases. Cancerous cells build up on the lining of the heart. When the lining of the heart is affected, patients have problems with their blood pressure in addition to respiratory problems.

Even couple of months of exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to pericardial mesothelioma between 30-50 years later. Due to long latency period of the disease, it is very difficult to diagnose before the cancer has developed and matured fully. Mesothelioma sufferers are elderly men aged 60-70 because this was the generation that worked with asbestos with little protection from its dust and fibers.

4. Benign Mesothelioma type is not dangerous. It is the rarest form of mesothelioma that do not technically have the cancerous symptoms and cell growth, but can still be dangerous for breathing and the disease can affect your quality of life.

Statistics of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is malignant rare cancer which is estimated to affect 2,000-3,000 newly diagnosed cases annually in the U.S. During the year 1970 to 1990 the United States reported an increased rate of mesothelioma, which has been stabilized and possibly decreased currently. But the, European countries continue to see an increase in the rate of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is found, among one in ten lakh persons.

Men are five times more likely to get affected, than women due to the working conditions under asbestos fibers. It is commonly seen in the ages 65 years and older. Mesothelioma is more common in the Caucasian nationality than African American.

Between 50 and 70% of all mesothelioma cases belong to Epithelioid Mesothelioma this cancer is usually extremely difficult to treat, but epithelioid mesothelioma is the most likely to respond to treatment.

Advanced stage diagnosis of mesothelioma is very rare as symptoms do not appear early. Hence, mesothelioma has a low survival rate that is about 1-2 years. But cancer research is slowly changing this statistic.
